Potty Training Your Puppy

Potty training your puppy should start the moment you bring him home.  While it’s true that puppies are like babies who have not yet learned to control when they need to go, a good head start will ensure your success in developing your puppy’s potty skills.

When you start potty training, be mindful of your actions.  Keep in mind that the puppy is observing you and makes associations based on what he sees.  Some puppies get excited at the mere sight of a leash because they have already associated it with taking a walk.

There are basic telltale signs that a puppy has to go and it is important that you watch out for these things.  These include sniffing the floor, barking at the door, turning around in circles, getting your shoes, and arching his back, among others.  When you see any of these signs, carry the puppy out and bring him to where he should go.  It is important to pick him up and carry him out because keeping his feet on the ground will make it harder for him to control his urge to go.

During the first few days of potty training, keep him under your close supervision.  Keep him restricted to a place with washable floors when you think you will not be able to watch over him to prevent accidents from happening.

Anytime accidents happen, it is important that you thoroughly clean the soiled area.  We might not be able to smell the odor after cleaning it with soap and water but keep in mind that the puppy has a stronger sense of smell.  They can smell odors that we can’t and if they can still smell it, the chances of them soiling the same area is greater.

Keeping your puppy on a strict schedule is another way of minimizing the chances of accidents, as the puppy will learn to control his urge to go based on the schedule.  Feed your dog at a consistent and regular time and take him outside to eliminate every after meal, early in the morning and before going to bed.

When taking him outdoors, it is important that you do not play with him until after he has eliminated.  Consider playing with him as his reward for eliminating outside.

Patience is important in potty training your puppy.  Keep in mind that the puppy is still learning to control his urges.  Accidents happen only because the puppy has not learned how to control his urge and does not know where the proper place to eliminate is.  Pay close attention to what your puppy tells you and this will make your potty training experience easier.
